I'm worried my son's going to miss a whole year of school

DEAR DEIDRE: I’m worried my son’s going to have to miss a whole year of school.

My son, who is dyslexic, struggled with the curriculum in year 5, so his school thought it was best they hold him back a year.

This way, he’d be more prepared when it came round to his SATs exams.

He’s 10, and I’m his dad, 43.

But last month, we had a letter from the government telling us it’s time to apply for secondary schools.

Now I’m worried he’s going to be forced to skip a year.

Is there anywhere I can get some advice?

DEIDRE SAYS: Deidre says: Repeating a school year is not covered by the law – this means it is up to the school and your local authority to decide whether they hold a child back.

It sounds as though there may have been a mix-up, as it certainly wouldn’t be in his interests to miss out on a whole year of his education.

Check with the school if they registered that your son was staying back a year.
