Health warning issued over Christmas turkey leftovers after festive feasts

THE NHS has issued a health warning for anyone who is eating Christmas dinner leftovers.

Millions of Brits tucked in to Turkey and Ham feasts on December 25 to celebrate Christmas Day.

And a festive favourite up and down the country is to tuck in to the leftovers – making everything from sandwiches to curry.

But the NHS has now issued a warning for anyone who is reheating their poultry in the next few days.

The NHS says: "Keep cooked meat and poultry in the fridge – if they are left out at room temperature, the bacteria that causes food poisoning can grow and multiply.

"After you've feasted on the turkey, cool any leftovers as quickly as possible (within 90 minutes), cover them and put them in the fridge."

They added: "If you're putting leftovers in the freezer, you could divide them into portions so you can defrost only as much as you need.”

"When you're serving cold turkey, take out only as much as you're going to use and put the rest back in the fridge. 

“Do not leave a plate of turkey or cold meats out all day – as part of a buffet, for example."

The health body continues: "If you're reheating leftover turkey or other food, always make sure it's steaming hot all the way through before you eat it. 

“Do not reheat food more than once."

How quickly does food poisoning start?

The first symptoms of food poisoning normally come on about one or two hours after eating contaminated food – although they could take a few hours, or even weeks, to develop.

The main symptoms include:

  • Tummy cramps
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea/feeling sick
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea (which may contain blood or mucus)
  • Lack of energy/weakness
  • High temperature
  • Aching muscles
  • Chills

Food poisoning can be caused by eating something that has been contaminated with germs.

There are a number of reasons why it can happen and any type of food can cause poisoning.

It may take a few days for you to recover, and the NHS recommends resting up at home and drinking plenty of water.

When you do feel up to eating, it's best to stick to bland foods like toast, crackers, bananas and rice until you recover.
