Groom’s nightmare 26-hour journey back from Marbella stag do after epic prank
Cheeky stags sent their groom on a 2,000-mile trip back from Spain.
Iain Tate, 43, arrived in Marbella dressed in a black wig, pink top, matching dangle ear rings, leather skirt, fishnet stockings, and black handlebar moustache…..while carrying a vacuum cleaner.
The baldy firefighter got used to being the late Queen frontman from the iconic ‘I Want to Break Free’ 1984 pop video.
But he had to make it home on his own when the 11-man party – including five firefighter, two IT experts, a police officer and an air traffic controller – paid £600 for his four-flight return via five countries.
Iain’s epic 26-hour journey took him on an 11am flight from Malaga to Dusseldorf in Germany (1,154 miles), Dusseldorf to the French capital Paris (256 miles), then Paris to Dublin (484 miles).
God knows the three-hour delay at Charles de Gaulle airport cost him dear as he missed his connecting 9.05pm flight home from Ireland to Leeds Bradford airport.
Another delayed departure meant all the available hotel rooms were booked.
“I had to book another flight to get a boarding card,” said Iain, of Stockton-on-Tees, tired after getting in from his last night out in Marbella at 6am on Monday, the day of his flights home.
“It cost £40 for the missed flight and about £100 for the new one.”
Best man Nick Bass, 36, who has an IT company in Sheffield, was inspired by Gazza, who once booked a series of flights home for best mate Jimmy ‘Fivebellies’ Gardner while playing in Italy.
“Iain was struggling to see the funny side when he missed his last flight home,” said Nick.
As he made a bed for the night on the floor of Dublin airport, the weary groom took a photo for stag party pals Bryan Bass, 41, Nico Johnson, 46, Scott Riley, 39,
Adam Thoms, 38, Sean Allison, 35, Paul Ions, 43, Michael Cooper, 40, Steve Masson, 43, and Carl Pattinson, 42, who by then were all back home in bed.
He landed in the UK around 1pm on Tuesday – 26 hours after he set off from Spain – with mum-of-four Emma, 38, waiting to meet him.
The couple, who have six children between them from previous relationships, marry at Redworth Hall, Darlington, on Nov 28.
“It should make for a good best man’s speech, but I felt like Judith Chalmers after all those air miles,” said Iain.
“It was bad enough setting off from the fire station dressed as Freddie Mercury.
“Then they got me special dissolving shorts for the pool in Marbella.
"The stitching disappears and they float off when you are wearing them.
“So I had to get out with everything on show. Getting home wasn’t much better.”
Still, life goes on…..
