Family pays £500 for one night in a playhouse posted on Airbnb as a joke

How much would you pay for a family staycation?

One family has decided to spend £500 for one night – at a playhouse that was listed as a joke on Airbnb.

Ollie and Kady Hammond had a ‘mini-break’ in the child’s toy house – with their kids Beau, five, and Brooke, ten.

They snapped up the booking after it was posted as a prank by Jason Kneen, 49.

He built the 8ft (2.4m) by 6ft (1.8m) structure in his garden during lockdown.

The dad-of-five then advertised it on the popular travel website for a laugh – but didn’t actually think anyone would sign up to stay.

So he was surprised when the Hammond family signed up for a night.

The accommodation is modelled on a Lottie Doll Treehouse, one of his children’s favourite toys, and cost around £3,500 to complete.

It boasts a balcony, slide, ladder, trapdoor and internet access, while toilet facilities are located in a nearby replica Tardis, from Doctor Who.

Jason of Ludgershall, Wiltshire, said the booking money will be going to charity.

He said: ‘They had a great time – they said it was better than any hotel they’d ever stayed at.

‘The kids went in the paddling pool and had pizza – they loved it.

‘It was the first time they’d used Airbnb and just went on there looking for something fun to do.

‘They were nearby anyway at the weekend so just went for it. They had a nice holiday.’

He added: ‘I only out it up for fun – we listed it as a space for a laugh.

‘We put that price on there [£500] and thought nobody would be interested.’

App developer Jason said the playhouse is open-plan and a ‘small space’ – but added that the guests will be able to use other facilities.

He said: ‘There are little bunk beds inside. It’s all open; it’s just a small space. The toilet – the Tardis – has been there for years.

‘[The playhouse] probably took a couple of weeks of elapsed time to build, but a week in total.

‘We got a local guy who does stuff for us in. We just asked him to price it up and do it.’

Jason said it will be the playhouse’s final booking.

What a shame.
