Babies are extremely vulnerable, especially when they’re sleeping. Parents stay up at night worrying about how much sleep their child is getting, how they’re laying, how warm the room is, and much more. Here’s how to get your baby to sleep in a crib and all you need to know about sleep safety for babies, according to Founders of Nini Baby, Kevin and Suze Patel.

How to get a baby to sleep safely

Crib

Not all cribs are safe for your baby, but there’s one way to make sure you’re choosing a suitable crib.

Kevin and Suze said: “You should always prioritise cribs that conform with the latest British Standards.

“Opt for cribs which can grow with your child (they’ll prove to be a more reliable investment over time), utilise breathable and premium materials (this is important for your baby’s skin, sleep quality and subsequent health).”

They added: “You can also choose a cot that has transparent sides, meaning you benefit from an unrestricted view of your baby whilst laying down yourself.”

Sleep separately

You should also keep your baby in the same room as you at night, but don’t sleep in the same bed.

The experts said: “It’s important that every newborn enjoys close contact with their parents.

“For example, it’s wonderful to have your baby lie on your chest whilst you’re awake.

“However, sleeping with your baby is incredibly dangerous and should be avoided because parents can roll over onto the baby, the baby can be suffocated in the bedding, become trapped between the mattress and a wall or headboard, fall off of the bed completely… and there’s an extensive list of risk factors that follow!”

Instead, Kevin and Suze recommend keeping the baby in a cot near your bed so you can keep an eye on your bundle of joy without worrying too much.

Lay your baby on its back when putting them to sleep in a crip – this step is absolutely essential.

The experts said: “This is one of the most protective actions you can take and there’s critical evidence from around the world to suggest that laying your baby on its back significantly reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

“Only place your baby on completely risk-free surfaces as sofas and armchairs aren’t suitable.

“Ensure there’s nothing loose in their sleeping space, such as soft toys or blankets.

“They might appear harmless but anything loose could potentially cause suffocation.”

Mattress

Investing in a firm and flat mattress for your baby’s crib is another crucial step.

The experts said: “It’s incredibly important that you invest in a firm, flat, breathable mattress for your baby.

“This enhances their quality of sleep and supports their physical development.

“As adults we know we suffer when we sleep on an uncomfortable mattress – a baby is still developing which means it’s even more important for them.

Choosing the right mattress is important to regulate the baby’s body temperature.

Baby sleep temperature

You must consider the temperature of the room your baby is sleeping in.

Kevin and Suze said: “The optimum setting for babies to sleep is actually quite specific, even down to the best temperature they can rest in.

“Make sure the room is between 16 to 20 degrees as this will allow them to rest comfortably.

“Similarly, make sure they have the right amount of layers on to suit the temperature of the room and don’t use cot bumpers as they can cause babies to overheat – this is also another suffocation hazard.”
