Sheep Inc. Returns With Carbon Negative Hoodie
Sustainability-focused knitwear label Sheep Inc. has returned with its latest release, this time creating a hoodie with a negative carbon footprint. This means that, rather than requiring offsetting, the hoodie is able to remove more CO2 from the atmosphere than is created through the manufacturing process.
This process begins at the raw material stage, with all merino wool sourced from three regenerative sheep stations in New Zealand that use innovative land management, feeding and grazing techniques to make the wool carbon-negative. This wool is then processed at solar-powered partners across Europe and treated with a chlorine-free treatment called Eternity X-Care.
The final stages involve a solar-powered knitter in Portugal, and the UK’s first carbon-neutral logistics partner. The use of Merino wool gives the hoodie self-cleansing properties and zero-odour retention, while also making it biodegradable.
Speaking to HYPEBEAST about the launch, Sheep Inc. founder Edzard van der Wyck explained, “We believe in the fashion industry’s collective responsibility to create products that work within safe, planetary boundaries. That means we aim to design products that naturally have a regenerative effect on our planet. Products that in their creation and use give back more to nature than they take, without the need to offset. This hoodie serves as a testament that this is possible. To show there can be a future where we design in harmony with nature.”
“To create our “zero emissions, zero harm and zero waste” hoodie, we spearheaded a synergistic partnership across our suppliers and manufacturers. This creates a product that naturally has no carbon footprint and, in its creation, takes more CO2 out of the atmosphere than its production puts in.”
“Being a “truly regenerative” brand means that in your existence, you naturally give more back to nature than you take. So going beyond carbon neutral. And achieving this without the need to offset or buy carbon credits. So it’s about having a business that in its existence is part of the solution of the climate crisis, not part of the problem.”
Sheep Inc.’s “zero emissions, zero harm and zero waste” hoodie is available now from the brand’s web store.
For more sustainable fashion, Greater Goods recently released a selection of items upcycled from celebrities’ old clothes.
