Rosario Dawson pays tribute to Ray Stevenson after Ahsoka co-star's death
Rosario Dawson has honoured her late Ahsoka co-star Ray Stevenson after his death, remembering the ‘extraordinary conversations’ that they shared together.
In May this year, it was announced that the actor had died at the age of 58.
Known for films including King Arthur, Thor and Punisher, the performer died just a few days shy of his 59th birthday.
This week, Star Wars series Ahsoka launches on Disney Plus, in which Ray plays a Jedi-turned-mercenary called Baylan Skoll in a posthumous performance that has already won praise in the first reviews.
Speaking about her late co-star, Rosario, 44, described Ray as an ‘almost, like, Nordic kind of man, who was very heavy-handed and then just like the most gentle, brilliant, like loving divine feminine spirit’.
‘You just had the most extraordinary conversations with him about his family and philosophies,’ she told People in an interview that took place before the actors’ strike began.
‘I’ve had so many people who I know are friends with him. We were so blessed to have him working with us. He made all of us better.’
Daredevil star Rosario added that Ray was ‘heavy-handed’ in the fight scenes that they shared together, stating: ‘I was like, “I’m really having to protect myself here. We’re putting in the work.”’
When the news of Ray’s death was announced earlier this year, Rosario posted a tribute to him on Instagram, including behind-the-scenes pictures that they took while making Ahsoka.
‘A giant of a man… @officialraystevenson_ , stunned and reeling from this tragic, devastating news. Gone too soon from this world,’ she wrote in her caption at the time.
‘At a loss for words… just wanted to mark this moment and share your ever ready and present smile. Love you forever. Holding your family in my heart. #LegendsNeverDie.’
The cause of the actor’s death has not been disclosed publicly.
Born in Lisburn in County Antrim, Northern Ireland on May 25 1964, Ray made his film debut in the 1998 movie The Theory of Flight.
He went on to play the titular character Frank Castle/The Punisher in the 2008 action thriller Punisher: War Zone.
Ray was married to actress Ruth Gemmell for eight years until their divorce in 2005. He had three children with Elisabetta Caraccia, an anthropologist.
Ahsoka premieres on Wednesday August 23 on Disney Plus with new episodes released on Wednesdays.
