Wayne Lineker slammed for worst post about brother Garys refugee comments
Wayne Lineker has been slammed on social media after sharing an inflammatory post about his brother Gary Lineker’s comments on the government's latest immigration policy.
This week, the Home Office, headed up by Suella Braverman, released its latest immigration policy which has been widely condemned by groups such as the UN Refugee Agency and Match of the Day’s Gary Lineker.
Gary hit the headlines after posting a tweet comparing the Conservative government’s policy to Nazi Germany.
Many took his tweets as a violation of the BBC’s impartiality rules, though the broadcaster is yet to reveal any consequences.
Wayne, whose claim to fame is owning the celebrity hang-out spot O Beach Ibiza and being the brother of Gary, took to Instagram on Thursday, where he posted an incendiary meme that was soon slammed by fans.
The picture showed a dingy full of people with a speech box that reads: “Where’s Gary Lineker’s House?”
“I’m gonna go with 'no comment' on this one guys. #matchoftheday #snatchoftheday,” Wayne added in the caption.
Followers took to the comments section to share their thoughts on Wayne's post, with many condemning him.
One person, who claimed to work with asylum seekers, scathed: “This is the worst post – I work with many vulnerable refugees and asylum seekers .. the most beautiful, compassionate, caring people whose own wish is to be safe and be able to keep their family safe.
“This is stirring up divide and hate … if people learned to live with compassion & kindness then the world would be a better place.”
“If you're going with no comment why the f**k post it you helmet,” another hit back, with a third adding: "There are ways to stay relevant when you’re getting older and losing touch… this ain’t it my man.”
“Hate to break it, but you’re an immigrant,” someone else chimed in, as another person said: “Get over him Wayne, need to let it go. Someone's always going to be more successful than you, the fact it's your brother will eat you up inside.”
The controversy began when the Home Office released a video outlining their policy. Gary, a keen Twitter user, replied: “Good heavens, this is beyond hurtful.”
“You're out of order here, @GaryLineker; you may be living safe and in comparative comfort but what about the communities devastated by this influx, feeling unsafe, infrastructure stressed to the limits? Of course, easy to pontificate when it doesn't directly affect you,” one angry Twitter user replied with.
Doubling down on his comments, Gary, 61, said: “There is no huge influx. We take far fewer refugees than other major European countries. This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s, and I'm out of order?”
Gary has since been supported by famous faces including Carol Vorderman.
The Countdown legend tweeted: “It is important that people who have a voice speak up about this appalling & corrupt government. So it's wonderful to see the love and support for @GaryLineker today.
"As for the Illegal Immigration Bill….I read it as the Immigration Bill which is in itself illegal.”
“Yes! Keep speaking up Gary!” wrote former Big Brother housemate India Willoughby, as former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said: “Well done Gary. The plan and the Bill are disgusting!”
