Dan Walker, 44, has spoken out after being criticised for saying he experienced one of the highlights of his “entire life” while performing on Strictly Come Dancing on Saturday. The star gushed over his time on the first live show, during which he performed a Quickstep with his partner Nadiya Bychkova, 32, while fronting BBC Breakfast this morning with Sally Nugent.

He recalled on the show: “I looked across to where Tess [Daly] normally comes down, that’s where my wife and my daughter were sitting, and Susie had tears pouring out of her eyes, like proper tears of joy.

“And she gave me this lovely little wave to say ‘well done Dad’.”

“Oh, you’re going to finish me off,” Sally emotionally admitted in response.

Dan continued: “That was one of the highlights of my entire life because she absolutely loved it.

“She’s the one, and her brother and sister, that’s why I decided to do the programme because they were desperate to watch it.

“So that for me was perfect, the dance was great, I really enjoyed it, but that was what it’s all about.”

“Week one, done!” Sally then said, while congratulating her co-star.

However, Dan was slammed on Twitter for his heartfelt admission after BBC Breakfast shared a clip of his words on their official page.

The programme captioned the tweet: ““My daughter gave me this lovely little wave to say ‘well done, Dad’”

“@mrdanwalker tells #BBCBreakfast Saturday was one of the highlights of his ‘entire life’ as his #Strictly routine brought his daughter to tears.”

Twitter user Harry–fotograf was less than impressed with Dan’s comment, as he fumed: “being able to ‘Dance’ is the ‘highlight’ of someone’s life

“how totally pathetic and how totally pathetic to waste everyone’s time talking about it.

Another Twitter user, DebsSayItAgain, rushed to defend Dan, writing back: “I think he said seeing his daughter was the highlight, not the dance.”

Dan seemed to appreciate Debs’ comment, as he hit back at the critical post: “I thought that was clear.  Thanks Debs.

“Anyone who has a 14 year old will know that sort of reaction is a rarity,” he added, alongside two laughing face emojis.

“Enjoy every minute,” Debs responded.

Despite Dan’s remark, Harry-fotograf still wasn’t happy, adding: “Either way, utterly pathetic to blub about it on TV tnx.”

Dan previously introduced his dance partner Nadiya to his wife Sarah Walker and the couple’s children, daughters Susanna and Jessica, and son Joe, alongside their beloved pet dog Winnie.

Their day in Dan’s hometown of Sheffield consisted of a trip to his hairdresser, before heading back to his home for dinner, prepared by Sarah.

Dan told his Instagram followers: “I got the chance to show @nadiyabychkova around Sheffield a bit today after training.

“She came to meet Sam at @capellihairsheffield – she’s booked in for a few weeks time – and she popped round for tea too!

“Mrs Walker cooked something lovely & the kids (and Winnie) had a lovely time #SheffieldIsSuper #Strictly.”
