Sir Rod Stewart has rebuffed the use of politically correct language. The Maggie May singer admitted he freely calls people “darling” or “love” and is not concerned with policing the way he speaks.

Addressing his stance in a new interview, the legendary crooner explained he uses the terms in a friendly manner.

The 76-year-old commented that the use of “darling” is not offensive if said towards someone in the appropriate way.

The musician opened up about his thoughts on political correctness as he claimed phrases such as “love” are now supposedly off-limits in today’s society.

“You’re not allowed to call anybody ‘darling’ or ‘love’, that’s all out the window now,” Rod commented.

“I think that they’re friendly terms, as long as it’s not shouting across the road, ‘Allo, darling, what you got in that basket?'”

The Do Ya Think I’m Sexy crooner claimed when he uses them people are not offended.

He continued to The Telegraph: “All the girls in my band I call darling, and I don’t think their husbands or boyfriends are offended.

“I call men friends darling. I call Elton [John] darling.”

Colloquial terms including “love” and “darling” have come under scrutiny in recent years with some sections of society claiming them to be sexist, while others argue it is a term of endearment depending on the circumstance.

Meanwhile, Rod is set to release his 31st studio album, The Tears of Hercules, which is scheduled for release on November 12.

The legendary musician explained that he made the album while in lockdown with his wife Penny Lancaster.

The couple, who have been married since 2007, spent time together in their 18th-century Essex mansion.

Two of his new songs, Precious Memories and Anybody Else But You, are dedicated to Penny.

“I’m madly in love,” he told the same publication. “These days, I don’t flirt with anybody at all. I wouldn’t dare! I mean, I don’t want to!”

Rod met his third wife in 1999, and they wed eight years later.

The couple have two sons together – Alastair, who is 15, and Aiden, 10.

The former model recently admitted she believed she had lost her sex appeal after going through the menopause.

Penny said that she had “freaked out” and added that she thought she had to “say goodbye” to her old self.

She explained that she has since come to terms with her body’s changes and said she has gone on to “embrace each stage of life with more maturity”.

The Loose Women star shared her concerns during a special ‘menopause matters’ edition of Hello! Magazine.
