Robert Downey Sr. died on Wednesday morning at the age of 85, it has been confirmed. The filmmaker passed away in his sleep, according to his wife.

He had been battling Parkinson’s Disease for five years prior to his death. 

His wife confirmed he had died peacefully at his New York home on Wednesday, July 7.

The actor, writer and producer is the father of Robert Downey Jr., who is widely known for playing Iron Man in the Marvel films.

Downey Sr was also a filmmaker like his son, having been a producer, director, actor and writer over his career.

His best known credit is for writing and directing the film Putney Swope in 1969.

He became known in the 1960s and 1970s for his counterculture films, often made on shoestring budgets.

Downey Sr directed and wrote films like Pound, Greasers’s Palace and Hugo Pool.

He has also starred in several films, including Hail Caesar, Boogie Nights, Magnolia and Sunchaser.

His last on screen credit was in the 2011 film Tower Heist where he played Judge Ramos.
