Neil Young Reveals How Wife Daryl Hannah Created ‘Colorado’ Cover Art
Neil Young has shared details about how his wife, Daryl Hannah, created the cover art for his forthcoming album, Colorado, with Crazy Horse.
The singer posted on his website that Hannah created the cover art using two photographs and an original painting by his daughter, Amber Young.
“[Hannah] used one ‘shadow on a horse’ photograph she had taken and one photograph she had collected and edited, selecting a section and turning it upside down,” Young wrote.
“Added to those was a painting my daughter did a few short years ago. Amber’s painting, shown on its side in the cover, is about 6 feet tall by 3 and a half feet wide [that]…she created, working with wax and colors.”
“It represents an audio envelope to me. I just love it and always have,” Young said about the painting.
One of the photos shows a horse and its reflection as it runs beside a body of water, while the other shows the shadow of Young’s head wearing a hat captured against a horse’s body.
Young writes, “Notice how the top left of the cover has a picture of a horse and a reverse image below it? The way that image represents my right shoulder, I am part horse! I just love this cover.”
Young also revealed that Hannah has designed the back and inside covers for Colorado, as well as the cover for the seven-inch vinyl single included with the LP version of the album.
Colorado is set to be released on October 25. Young recently posted “Milky Way,” a song from the upcoming album, on his YouTube channel and Neil Young Archives.
