Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Have Touching Conversation with Pharrell About Their Relationship
Beyoncé and Jay-Z weren’t the only big-time musicians who met the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at the Lion King premiere on Sunday. Artist and producer Pharrell Williams also had the honor of meeting Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and he used his special moment with the royal couple to praise their “significant” relationship and “what it means in this climate.”
Williams called the couple’s union “amazing” and “wonderful” while meeting them on the red carpet. “Don’t ever take that for granted, but what it means in today’s climate, I just wanted to tell you it’s so significant for so many of us. Seriously,” he continued. The musician was likely discussing the fact that Harry and Meghan have broken boundaries as an interracial couple in the British royal family.
Harry and Meghan nodded at the praise. “Thank you so much. That’s so nice of you to say,” the duchess responded.
“It’s significant,” Williams added. “We cheer you guys on.” The Sussexes touched his arm in gratitude.
“Oh, thank you. They don’t make it easy,” Meghan said. The Duchess of Sussex didn’t specify exactly who “they” are, but her comments come after months of repeated scrutiny in the tabloid press and online.
“So you understand the significance. It’s beautiful,” Williams told the duchess.
Back in February, Beyoncé gave the Duchess of Sussex, whose mother is African American, similar praise for being a woman of color in the royal family. “Meghan brought many Black traditions to her Royal Wedding including a Chicago-based Black pastor, an amazing gospel choir, and a young Black cellist,” a post read on Beyoncé’s website in honor of Black History Month. “At the wedding her culture was front and center, and she and Prince Harry have continued to push the race relations dialogue forward both near and far.”
