Kate Garraway hits back after biased Coronation chat sparks row

GMB: Republic protestor Peter Tatchell

Kate Garraway has fired back on Twitter today after Good Morning Britain viewers claimed she showed “bias” in a live interview.

The 56-year-old and her co-host Ed Balls found themselves in hot water after speaking to protestor Peter Tatchell.

The pair questioned him after he protested during King Charles’s Coronation.

It comes amid news that the Met Police arrested 64 protesters at last weekend’s Coronation.

Viewer @Stirling_Ann raged online after witnessing the pair’s chat with Peter, and they weren’t alone.

Their tweet read: “FFS get a grip @kategarraway and @edballs trying to justify the police arresting coronation protesters. #FascistState #NotMyKing #FreedomOfSpeech.”(sic)

Kate was quick to respond, claiming she was simply “balancing a debate” in view of her 520,000 followers.

She tweeted: “It’s not justifying – it’s called balancing a debate and putting an argument forward for our guests to respond to which is @edballs & I’s job!”

During the interview, Peter began by airing his disappointment, telling the hosts he was “angry at police behaviour”.

He said: “In the weeks prior, republic had negotiated with the police and secured an agreement that a protest could take place.

“But on the day, before the protest had even begun, the six key organisers of the republic were all arrested on fake charges by the police, and several hundred people who were trying to go to the square were blocked.”

As Peter tried to continue, Kate interrupted: “What were the charges and why were they fake?”

In a later segment, Kate went on to defend the police, telling the panel: “Can I just say because the Met Police aren’t here, they’re sort of damned if they do and damned in they don’t, aren’t they?

“If they hadn’t taken… I appreciate you saying you were never going to use the megaphones, if they had not taken the megaphones and something had gone wrong or if they hadn’t been pre-empted, we would have said how hopeless the Met Police were for that.”

@world_wanderer4 watching at home shared: “Kate and Ed terribly biased today… shocking.”

@FlopsyPickle agreed: “Wow Kate and Ed are being really impartial this morning, aren’t they? Purposely being argumentative and playing dumb. #gmb #goodmorningbritain.”

“Where is your balanced view? Why just attacking the removal of the protesters? One of the strongest parts of your show is 2 informed people debating with opposite views,”(sic) @LuciBolt pointed out.

However, @dobiemanengl didn’t agree: “Go Kate Garraway… well said, she challenges Peter, and he Gulps Well done Kate!”(sic)

Kate also replied to another user, who claimed she had got her facts wrong.

@causses70 posted: “Penny Mordaunt had the honour of holding the sword at the Coronation because she is Lord President of the Council and NOT as Leader of the House. Get it right.”

Kate fired back: “I didn’t say it was because she was leader of the house??!!!!”
