Elton John’s handwritten lyrics up for auction
On the heels of Elton John movie “Rocketman” and his memoir, “Me,” a number of handwritten lyrics to John’s hits with Bernie Taupin are being sold by Taupin’s ex-wife.
The lyrics to tunes including “Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road,” “Your Song,” “Candle in the Wind,” “Bennie and the Jets” and “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting” are being sold off by Maxine Taupin, via the LA auction house Bonhams, on Dec. 9.
They are being sold as separate lots, with six songs in total (also including “Border Song”).
Bonhams’ Giles Moon quipped, “The lyrics reveal Taupin’s careful wordcraft and his famously inconsistent spelling.”
Maxine was married to Taupin from 1971 to 1976, and John was the best man at their wedding. She’s said to have been the inspiration for a number of John and Taupin’s songs, including most famously “Tiny Dancer.” She’s also said to have coined the phrase “The Bitch Is Back,” another John hit, and was reportedly a catalyst for his signature over-the-top onstage look.
Meanwhile, John revealed in an interview last week that he wore a diaper while performing in Vegas in 2017, after a prostate operation that affected bladder control.
