Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford have told pals they believe their reported This Morning axe could be down to their age, according to OK! online’s insider.

Our source says that the TV presenting power couple are trying to understand the reason behind the decision to give them the boot from presenting their usual Friday slot.

Alison Hammond, 45, and Dermot O’Leary, 47, are reportedly set to take their place as hosts soon.

Our insider said: “The viewers love them, but Eamonn has said to Ruth he wonders if it’s because they’re both 60 and too old.

“It’s a real shame. They wonder if it’s an ageist thing. Are they not cool and young enough to present the show?”

“Ruth and Eamonn are both telly legends – they’ve done it all, so it seems unfair.”

And while some reports have claimed Holly Willoughby, 39, and Phillip Schofield, 58, who present the show on Monday to Thursday are “untouchable”, our source believes otherwise.

“Holly and Phil seem invincible, but people always say that and then suddenly they crumble – TV can be fickle.

“If you speak to any of the staff at This Morning, they’ll tell you Ruth and Eamonn are the favourites.

“They’re so popular with everyone – the crew are happiest when Eamonn and Ruth are in.

“Eamonn talks to the tea lady the same way he talks to famous people. That is the way they both are and that’s why they’re so loved.

“They’re the most down to earth people you could meet. They’re so natural with people.”

Before news of their axing was first reported, Eamonn said he finds it tough to handle whenever he becomes the target of vicious internet trolls.

He said: “People say it’s water off a duck’s back but people wake up and they know they can get you sacked,” he said. “That’s the thing about live TV. It can be very stressful.”

Meanwhile, in an interview with Notebook that took place before the story of the pair reportedly getting the boot came to light, Ruth highlighted how hard they’ve worked to get where they are today.

She said: "We've put the work in. We didn't do a reality show and get an overnight job on the telly. We've come up through the ranks.

“Eamonn was only 19 when he started out. And he was doing the teatime news in Belfast during The Troubles.

"It was heavy stuff. And he's now got an OBE for services to broadcasting."

A spokesperson for This Morning told OK!: “We have a stellar presenting line up on This Morning in Holly & Phillip and Eamonn & Ruth. Any additions to this line up will be announced in due course."
