Jack P Shepherd, 33, was turned down for the role of Billy Elliot in the Hollywood movie, after he “f***ed up” in his audition. The lead part in the movie went to Jamie Bell who won the BAFTA for Best Actor in a Leading Role and has since gone on to have a glittering career appearing in films such as Fantastic Four.

I did have the chance!

Billy Elliot went on to pick up a number of awards and was also nominated for three Oscars at the 2001 awards.

Discussing his near-miss in his Sofa Cinema Club podcast with fellow Corrie stars Colson Smith and Ben Price, he said: “When this film came out I was like 11/12-years-old and I’d obviously been for an audition.

“I was only gutted in the sense that I didn’t get it because of the success of the film… Academy Award nominations.

“And I used to watch the Academy Awards religiously. And getting up in the middle of the night to watch them.

“So, when you sort of see a film that you auditioned for, it could have been you and you could have been there, it’s kind of like…”

Ben said: “That’s hard.”

Jack continued: “Yeah, I suppose, yeah. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think I’d have done anywhere near as [good] a performance as Jamie Bell did.”

Colson commented: “But you’d have liked the chance?”

Jack added: “Well, I did have the chance and I f**ked it up!”

Meanwhile, Jack has starred in the soap for 20 years after landing the role of David Platt in the year 2000, when he was 12-years-old.

He has gone on to win numerous awards including Best Young Actor at the Inside Soap Awards just one year after he started.

Other gongs include villain of the year at The British Soap Awards and Best Actor at the TV Choice Awards.

On his Instagram, the star often shares throwback photos of himself throughout his years on Corrie.

Next to a collection of snaps, he typed: “Today marks my 20th year anniversary playing the role of David Platt.

“Here’s a few photos of my life before I got the part and a few highlights of my character.

 “Thank you @coronationstreet for everything.”

The star has also reportedly signed a new Coronation Street contract as he joins the “veterans” bracket of the show.

A source told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre TV column: “Jack might be classed as one of the younger stars but he’s got 20 years under his belt and that nearly puts him in the veterans’ bracket.

“He’s loved by fans young and old and is an important piece of the Corrie jigsaw.”

Coronation Street continues tomorrow on ITV1 at 8.30pm.
