Britney Spearss Lawyer Calls Jamie Spearss Decision to End Conservatorship a “Massive Legal Victory”
Britney Spears is celebrating a major win in her ongoing court battle against the conservatorship managed by her father, Jamie Spears.
Yesterday, it was revealed that Jamie had filed an official court petition to terminate his daughter’s conservatorship, which has held control over her personal and professional life for the last 13 years. The petition comes weeks after the pop star accused her father of conservatorship “abuse” and he filed to step down as her head conservator.
Britney’s lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, released a statement obtained by People, describing the latest court developments as a “massive legal victory.”
“Having exposed his misconduct and improper plan to hold his daughter hostage by trying to extract a multi-million dollar settlement, Mr. Spears has now effectively surrendered. There is no settlement,” Rosengart said.
But the attorney also declared that even though Jamie has filed to end the legal arrangement, they will continue to investigate the Spears family patriarch regarding the misuse of Britney’s finances and earnings.
“To the extent Mr. Spears believes he can try to avoid accountability and justice, including sitting for a sworn deposition and answering other discovery under oath, he is incorrect and our investigation into financial mismanagement and other issues will continue,” Rosengart’s statement continued.
In his court petition filed on Tuesday, Jamie described being influenced by Britney’s emotional court testimonies this summer detailing the emotional and mental stress of living under the conservatorship.
“As Mr. Spears has said again and again, all he wants is what is best for his daughter,” the filing read. “If Ms. Spears wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes that she can handle her own life, Mr. Spears believes that she should get that chance.”
