Brendan Grace dead: Father Ted star dies aged 68 after lung cancer battle
Father Ted star Brendan Grace has died at the age of 68 after a battle with lung cancer.
RTE announced that the Irish star died in hospital in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
According to the website, Grace’s family say he died peacefully and was very grateful for the support from fans all over the world since his illness was announced.
Grace is best known for playing Father Fintan Stack in Father Ted.
He was set to tour Ireland this summer, but he had to cancel it after receiving a cancer diagnosis while being treated for pneumonia.
A spokesperson for the comedian said last week: "Brendan Grace has been in hospital for the last four weeks receiving treatment for pneumonia.
"It has now transpired that he is also suffering from cancer for which he is receiving ongoing care and treatment.
"His family are a great support to him at this difficult time and respect for their privacy would be much appreciated."
Mr Brown's Boys creator Brendan O'Carroll is one of the stars who has paid tribute to Grace, as he tweeted: "So sad at the passing of a great comedy legend, husband and father B rendan Grace.
"He opened doors for so many of us and leaves a legacy of love and laughter that will echo through this land and we will all mourn his passing.
"Rest peacefully Bottler you’ve earned it."
Grace is survived by his wife Eileen Doyle, who he married in 1973, and their four children, Melanie, Amanda, Brendan and Bradley.
